My bottom is broken and I never knew it

Gluteus medius muscle role in stablising pelvis

See, they have a broken bottom too

Today I remembered some words of wisdom from one of the nice chaps at Running Bath.  He thought my funky running ‘style’ (pigeon toed and crossing my legs) might be due to instability in the Gluteus Medius, not helped by the 2 bouts of Sciatica I had a few years ago.  So, basically he was trying to nicely say I have a weak bottom – yet another thing to add to my list of freakish physical idiosyncrasies.

So, having done my usual bounce round the living room to Body Jam (no. 50 this week) I thought I would google ‘Gluteus Medius activation exercises’.  It seems that the easiest way to test this is a lying side leg raise.  This should be done with the leg slightly behind the plane of your body with the Pelvis held still.

So, I’m lying on the floor, poised ready to raise my leg.   I try to lift it and my bottom goes into spasm (never a good thing)!  Now, I can do standard leg raises till the cows come home, but this left me whimpering.  I think we can safely say that muscle is a little weak *cough*.

Doing a bit of reading it seems that you can blame a lot of running injuries on weak Glute Medius, so I’m kind of keen to fix my bottom before I hurt something else.  At least my neighbours should be amused by the sight of my legs waving up and down as they walk past my front window, although the screaming might worry them.  The things we do in the name of fitness eh?
