War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds

Last night was fab!  The BF and I trekked the 50 or so miles to Cardiff to see Jeff Wayne’s spectacular War of the Worlds.  All  I can say is Wow, what a production.

I’ve only listened to the soundtrack a couple of times, if ever, and that was around 20 years ago, so I could only remember the main premise of the story and certainly none of the specifics.  I’d deliberately avoided listening the BF’s CD so I didn’t have any preconceptions on the night. As a result I was pretty excited by the time the show started.

The music to introduce the cast was enough to give me goosebumps.  After which followed a slight moment of embarrassment as the last cast member to be introduced was Jeff Wayne.  I hadn’t realised he was the chap conducting the orchestra, I’d thought it was someone else doing a travelling version of his show, d’uh.

I loved the animatronic Martian machines and the simulated heat rays and pyrotechnics. My favourite thing is still the holographic Liam Neeson, I thought he made a great narrator and has a gorgeous speaking voice.  In fact all the cast had beautiful voices, although for me Marti Pellow and Jason Donovan stole the show.  I did kind of feel sorry for Marti as mostly he only got to sing two lines over and over again “The chance of anything coming from Mars are a million to one – but still they come!

For those of you out there who are partial to a long-haired rock god Will Stapleton of Jettblack fits the bill. His wailey rock vocals were brilliant!

In short the story was great, the effects spell binding, the music utterly absorbing and the overall performance was just superb.  It was well worth the trek and I’d go again if I could.

My final though as I left the arena was for the poor cleaners.  If I were them I’d be very grumpy at the thought of cleaning up all the leaves thrown around during Forever Autumn.
