Running in a winter wonderland

December 11, 2012
bus shelter on a frosty foggy night

frost and fog, almost eerie

Tonight’s run (week 4 run 3) was stunning, although not necessarily for the run itself.  It was actually due to the weather, which was a horrid -2C and foggy.  The road and pavements were all beautifully frosted and the light from the streetlights and cars was diffused by the fog.  The Christmas lights in people’s gardens twinkled gently against frosty buildings and trees.  Due to the cold there was hardly anyone out and about, giving my usually bustling housing estate a sort of otherworldly air.

I must have got caught up in looking at the scenery and smelling the smoke from log burners, but before I knew it I found I was running a little bit faster and harder. Including my warm up and down I’m now averaging around 13 min mile, which is better than my 14 min average for week 4 run 1.  I love running in the cold, it stops me from overheating and helps to keep me moving so as not to freeze!

Now looking forward to week 5, although from here on in it gets pretty challenging.  Other good news, despite a minor fluctuation due to Xmas party over eating I’m still 13st 8lb.  I now have high hopes for not piling on the pounds over Xmas 🙂

Loved your post! What I love the most about running is how you suddenly see the world in ways you never noticed by car, train, plane, or even just walking.
