Hobbies can be bad for your health

bike in deep now

I’m hoping this isn’t what the BF has in mind

In an effort to be virtuous over Christmas I’ve agreed to take my bike to the BF’s tomorrow in the hope that we can get out and about on at least a couple of days.  I personally think this is stunningly optimistic for a number of reasons;

  • The UK weather forecast is currently very, very wet and windy!  I cant see it changing any time soon.
  • We have been known to eat a lot over Christmas (shocking I know) and large amounts of food and exercise do not sit well with me.
  • I’m hoping to keep up the Couch25k over the holidays and cycling would eat into potential running time and leave the legs tired (I know that’s just being a wuss)
  • Christmas TV, there are some things that are just compulsory viewing (must make a list)
  • The clincher is that we’ve just started playing Lego Lord of the Rings on the PS3.  Last year was Pirates of the Caribbean and we played that for 13 hours straight one day!

So, between all of the above and seeing friends and family I’m not sure when the BF thinks we’re going to be hitting the road………

However, I have been dutiful and given the bike a once over to make sure I’m ready to go out if the occasion arises.  I’m regretting it because I spent the better part of 2 hours trying to change the tyres, accompanied by semi-continuous swearing.  My bike came with 40m wide tyres, which are comfy, but have a fair amount of drag.  I decided to change these for 28m tyres to see if I could go faster with less effort.  The old tyres came off easily, but the new ones were stunningly hard to get onto the frames.

Even with tyre irons I’ve managed to mangle my poor fingers (and broke nails) and caused a puncture in the process!  I cracked my head on a pedal when turning the bike upside down and dropped a wheel on my foot when trying to pump up the tyre.  This is before I even get on a bike……..

The bit I’m most worried about now (other than going for a ride) is putting the bike carrier on the car on my own.  Its boot mounted and is technically a 2 man job.  I think I could be looking at some expensive paint repairs if not careful……..

Maybe it would be a better idea just to go for a dive on the 27th as the BF has been suggesting.  Historically I have a much better injury rate with diving (if you don’t count the 9 weeks off work due to Sciatica).  Maybe, if I just point out to him that this is meant to be a holiday………….? A man with a plan is a dangerous thing.
