Janathon Day 28 – Mistress of the elements

January 28, 2013

luckily I still weigh too much to be swept of my feet, but running in wind is bloomin hard!

Janathon appears to have evolved into an extreme weather challenge for me.  Todays run, while short, involved rain and gale strength wind!

I don’t know what possessed me, but I got home from work having nearly been blown off the road a couple of times and thought “It’s not that bad out, really”. In my little bit of the estate it was sheltered, there was barely a breeze and no rain.  So, adopting my best “now or never” approach I ventured out.  I may have been ever so slightly wrong in all of this.

My 5 min warm-up walk was fine, didn’t even feel cold as allegedly the temp is now a sultry 9C.  The first hint that all was not well though was on turning the first corner in my run and being hit by a solid wall of wind.  The kind of wind they only seem to have in silent movies when they show people being blown along the floor to frantic organ music.    Now running clothing is pretty tight-fitting, but I wear a baseball cap when running (god forbid anyone recognise me) and there were several times I nearly lost it to a badly timed gust.

The upshot being that I got my first ever interval run, as every couple of mins the going would suddenly get a lot harder and then ease off with each gust of wind.  Just when I was starting to get used to this, the rain started :-(.  Needless to say I was unimpressed.  Having had my face sandblasted by the wind the rain felt like I was being stabbed with hot pins.  I’m not ashamed to say I threw in the towel after a mere 18 min and 1.4 miles, but I can at least be proud of the impulse to give it a go in the face of sheer obvious stupidity.

I should add that this was even stupider as it was all in the cause of research.  My Runkeeper app on my Windows7 phone has stopped working and since Runkeeper elected to withdraw their app from the marketplace you can’t re-install it.  Over the weekend I managed to find another app called Caledos Runner that synchs with my Runkeeper account and I was really desperate to try it out.  No I really couldn’t wait for better weather, if I’m going to do something it has to be now, I’m not good with delayed gratification.  So, having played with my new app I think its here to stay, I really like it.  The major advantage over the old one is that you can use the media player at the same time, an obvious requirement that the old one just failed to provide. Duh!

Despite the nasty weather my first run without the c25k podcasts went really well!  I now predict I’ll be spending hours constructing running playlists, I’m just that kind of geek :-).

Janathon totals:

  • running – 22.63 miles
  • rowing – 2.36 miles
  • cycling – 4.3 miles
  • exercise class – 90 mins
  • walking – 3 mile
  • timewarp – 2
  • Karaoke housework – 2
